Ok this goes for both entering sweepstakes and for enter for freebies. This is an IMPORTANT step.
Yes I.D Theft is a cause for concern, but there are millions and millions of people in the world many of them will have the same name as you. This bit is not so much of a problem. But if you are that concerned about giving your name out, the answer is an simple one, either make up a fake name or dont enter nothing, as this is not the hobbie for you.
If you make up a fake name then beware, because your mail man might not deliver your sample or prize, and if it is a prize that is worth anything, you will be disqualified. There is no way around it. When you win a prize worth over $599 you will have to pay taxes on it.
This means you will have to provide your SSN and file a 1099. We will get to this some more as we get in to accepting prizes that are worth more than a few bucks.
For the main #1 rule you never give out your SSN or bank info.
Back to entering your name, my feelings on this is if you want to get a freebie or enter a sweepstakes, then give out your name. Other wise it will cause more harm than good.

Sweepstakes 101
Ok so you want to win a prize or two.
The very first thing you need to do is set up an email address that you can enter and get emails from, but be prepared for tons of spam that you will have to weed through on a regular basis.
A couple of good sites are yahoo, hotmail, mail.com, and gmail. these offer free easy to use email. Gmail offers free POP email accounts.
After you have your free email address, it is time to prepare your self, in order to win a prize, you have to enter a sweepstakes, contest, or what ever.
In order to enter you have to give out personal information.
*Your first and last name
* Your Home address
* your City, State, and zip code
* Your Email address
* and yes your phone number (I can give you a few ways around this, but be prepared to give it out)
* Your Birthday (yes there is a REAL LEGIT reason they need this)
* NEVER GIVE OUT SSN, BANK INFO, OR OTHER REAL PERSONAL STUFF LIKE THIS
I will go over each and every Item in detail as we go along. I will go over the pros and cons of each.
